Mark Ingram, Ryan Griffin and rookie Brandin Cooks were the stars of the Saints' offense in the team's first preseason outing of 2014.
The Saints won the contest, 26-24 when the Rams missed a 59-yard field goal attempt with :11 left in the game. Greg Zuerlein was barely wide left after missing a 46-yard attempt with just under six minutes remaining.
Griffin completed 17 of 24 pass attempts for 190 yards and a touchdown. Ingram carried the ball eight times for 83 yards and a 22-yard touchdown late in the second quarter. Cooks had five receptions for 55 yards and scored a touchdown on a 25-yard pass play in the third quarter.
Drew Brees watched from the sidelines as he continued to rest a sore muscle.
Luke McCown started in place of Brees. He completed 7 of 10 passes for 49 yards and threw an interception on the Saints' first possession.
Shaun Hill got the start for St. Louis and threw two touchdown passes in the first half.
The Saints turned over the ball twice but the defense failed to force any turnovers.
"I'm glad we got the win, but we had far too many penalties, I think ten," coach Sean Payton said. "I was encouraged with our ability to run the ball," he added.
