Toledo-Based Sponsor Shuts Online Charter School

(Toledo, OH)   Ohio's largest online charter school is closing, for good, today.

The Educational Service Center of Lake Erie West voted Thursday to shutter the Electronic Classroom Of Tomorrow, citing financial losses from the repayment of state funding.

The Toledo-based board says the 12,000 students served by ECOT have options to finish the school year, including other online schools, homeschooling or returning to their home districts.

Teachers could be laid off as early as Monday. There is no school today, as teachers are grading end-of-semester exams and other student work. Court cases involving the repayment of 25-million dollars to the Ohio Department of Education remain pending.
