Lake Erie Algae Forecast to Be Released

(Toledo, OH) Federal researchers release their Lake Erie algae bloom forecast today.

The National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration (NOAA) predicts how bad the toxic algae bloom will get in the western basin of Lake Erie each summer.

Boaters, swimmers, and fishermen will find out today how hazardous things will get-- which could be dicey with dry weather and early heat this summer. The algae bloom season can run well beyond Labor Day and affect everything from tourism to drinking water.

The dangerous part is how close the bloom gets to Toledo's water intake, which is what caused the toxic Toledo water crisis in 2014. NOAA scientists will brief the community from Ohio State's Stone Lab at lunchtime.
