Jail Site Opponents Present Petitions For Vote

(Toledo, OH)   The grassroots effort to keep the Lucas County Jail in downtown Toledo appears headed for a vote.

A group of concerned residents turned in petitions with nearly 11,000 signatures Tuesday to put the issue on the November ballot.

The ballot measure is a Toledo City Charter amendment that would block construction of a new jail outside downtown.  Lucas County voters will decide a tax levy in November that would pay for a $180 million jail off Detroit Avenue.

County commissioners have put a 37-year bond issue on the ballot-- but the grassroots group now hopes their citizen referendum will serve as a counter-ballot-measure.
