If you're a Red Wings fan, you probably haven't payed too much attention to the NHL in recent years.
The Wings have been terrible, boasting a "veteran" roster, a blue line deprived of talent, and nobody on the ice talented enough to be worth the price of admission.
Last night, it seemed like all of that has started to change.
25 yr old Anthony Mantha exploded for 4 goals on the night, as the young Red Wings talent led the way in a 4-3 Home Opening win against the Stars.
The Larkin Line
The Larkin line is everything Red Wings fans have been waiting for.
Tyler Bertuzzi is 24.
Dylan Larkin is 23.
Anthony Mantha is 25.
That first line put the team on its back and overcame a 2-0 first period deficit to win the game 4-3.
We know Larkin is the face the of the franchise. But everyone has been waiting for Anthony Mantha to have a breakout year. He was a first round pick in 2013, and oftentimes struggled in recent years, with effort as a main cause of concern for Head Coach Jeff Blashill.
I know it's only two games in, but everyone is impressed by Mantha's performance this season, including Blashill.
Aside from Tyler Seguin deking Larkin out of his skates to put the Stars up 2-0, the Larkin line played exceptionally well against a very good team. The Wings are going to need the other lines to step up if they want to be a playoff team, but it's not the expectation of this team. The important thing for this team is to have the younger guys playing often, and making improvements.
The power play unit looked leaps and bounds better than it did last year. Filip Hronek and Dennis Cholowski looked great moving the puck around on the blue line, creating quality chances for Mantha and company.
We'll see how far this team can go, but this year looks promising. If you're one of those fans that hasn't been watching recently, it's time to turn the TV back on.
The Yzerman era has begun.
