My love for football is rooted in three rivalries:
- Bears vs Packers
- Ohio State vs Michigan
- Toledo vs Bowling Green
I've seen the Bears beat the Packers, I've seen the Wolverines and the Buckeyes trade blows (a long time ago), but I had never seen the Falcons beat the Rockets.
I was a student at BG for three of the greatest Falcon teams to ever play.
I saw Dave Clawson's defense shut down Heisman hopeful Jordan Lynch and the Huskies for the 2013 MAC Championship.
Then, I got to see Dino Babers implement "Falcon Fast". Quarterback Matt Johnson slinging the ball down the field to NFL talents, Roger Lewis and Gehrig Dieter. They won a second MAC title in 2015.
None of these teams beat Toledo. None of them.
Then, the Falcons fell on tough times in the Mike Jinks era. Recruiting went downhill, wins were few and far between, and the identity of the Falcon Football Program was lost.
In came Scot Loeffler.
The Falcons pulled off an all time upset over a very good Toledo Rockets football team. The Falcons were 27 pt. underdogs, and contained an explosive Rockets offense.
Dan, Jake and I discuss the game on the Glass City Celly Podcast on Monday, putting a bow on this all time classic of a game.
In 1969, Bo Schembechler kicked off the Ten Year War by upsetting Woody Hayes' greatest Buckeye team in Ann Arbor.
Michigan man Scot Loeffler, did just that on Saturday. It might not be Ohio State/Michigan, but this BG/Toledo rivalry is going to be a damn good treat in the coming years.
As long as Jason Candle and Scot Loeffler are leading these programs, this rivalry is back on.
